US Open Tennis
The US Open tennis tournament is held every August and September
in Flushing, New York, which is a borough of Queens. The tournament
is held at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National
Tennis Center, and is the final event of the Grand Slam. The Grand
Slam also includes the Australian Open (held in January in Melbourne);
the French Open (held in Paris in May); and Wimbledon (held in London
in June).
The US Open was once known as the US National Championships. The
New York tournament began in 1881 as a single men's event. However,
it didn't take long for women's singles, men's and women's doubles
and mixed doubles to became a part of the budding annual tradition.
Also in 1881, the USTA was formed in New York under the name, United
States National Lawn Tennis Association. The organization was created
to standardize tennis rules and regulations and to nurture the sport.
Early US Open tournaments were played at the West Side Tennis Club
in Forest Hills, Queens, NY. Now in Flushing Meadows, the tournament
has evolved into a star-studded tennis extravaganza open to both
amateurs and professionals. US Open tennis ticket sales have set
records in the past several years due to the popularity of its young
stars. Many have claimed that the US Open boasts the most enthusiastic
crowds of all the Grand Slam events. For more information on the
US Open, please visit the Official
US Open Website.
US Open tennis tickets are sold for more than face value.
