New York Theatre
The Theatre on Nassau Street hosted New York's first recorded stage performance in 1750: Shakespeare's Richard III. (The first native-born form of musical entertainment to flourish on the American stage was the minstrel show. Blackface acts -- in which white men blackened their faces to look like African slaves -- were prevalent in circuses beginning in the 1790s.) By the 1870s, "Broadway" and "theatre" went hand-in-hand, and Union Square (the area near Broadway at 14th Street) had become New York City's main theatre district. With a growing population, improvements in transportation and an ever-increasing flood of well-funded tourists, the demand for stage entertainment was high.

Fast-forward to modern-day Broadway: Broadway's business peaked during the 1927-28 season when more than 70 theatres hosted over 250 shows. But by the 1970s, however, Times Square had become gaudy and one of most dangerous neighborhoods in New York. The once glamorous theatres were in disrepair.

Broadway in the 1980's was dominated by foreign inventions like Cats and Les Miserables. The 1990s saw the rise of corporations like Disney producing musicals such as Beauty and the Beast and Lion King. These hits brought more theatergoers to Times Square, and by the late 1990s, a cleaner and more wholesome Times Square had been born. New York's theatre district profitable once again.

Today, Times Square is still a major tourist attraction, and the theatre remains a key factor in the city's financial health. According to the League of Theatre Owners and Producers, Broadway shows currently sell $1.5 billion worth of theater tickets annually. When you add hotels, restaurants and stores, it's estimated that theatergoers contribute $4.5 billion to the New York City economy. Many skeptics grumble about New York's prospects and the viability of commercial theatre, but it seems that both are capable of weathering many different kinds of storms.
