Samuel Ryder and the Ryder Cup
English entrepreneur Samuel Ryder didn't take up golf until after
his 50th birthday. Born in 1858, he was the son of a Manchester
corn merchant and went to school at Manchester University. After
school, Ryder formed the Heath and Heather Seed Company in Hertfordshire.
His business quickly prospered, and in 1906 he was elected mayor
of St Albans. He became ill due to overwork, and fresh air and light
exercise were prescribed by his doctor. He was encouraged to take
up golf. One year later, he had a six handicap.
Several years later, after one of many informal matches between
the American and British professional teams, British golfer George
Duncan suggested that Ryder commission a trophy and help organize
regular, formal matches. The first official Ryder Cup Matches were
June 3-4, 1927, at the Worcester (Mass.) Country Club. The British
defeated the American Team, 9-3. The inaugural US Ryder Cup Team
was captained by Walter Hagen, a charter Member of The PGA of America.
Today, Europe and the US take turns hosting this biennial event
in September. Samuel Ryder lived to see two Ryder Cup Matches in
England. While celebrating the holidays with his family in London,
he died of a massive hemorrhage on January 2, 1936 at the age of
77. He was buried with his favorite mashie (5-iron).
The Ryder Cup Trophy stands 17 inches high, is nine inches from
handle to handle, and weighs four pounds. The figure depicted on
the top of the trophy is Abe Mitchell, Samuel Ryder's friend and
instructor. Appendicitis prevented Mitchell from competing in the
inaugural Matches in 1927, but he returned to compete for Great
Britain in three subsequent matches. The Ryder Cup Trophy is still
the only prize the winning Team receives at this prestigious event.
