About the Rodeo
Welcome! I hope you will enjoy this introduction to the wonderful sport of rodeo. So head
on down the trail with me as we explore the fascinating world of professional rodeo.
Rodeo is a sport that evolved from ranch competitions in the time period that we now
call the 'Wild West.' Rodeos are held all over the world and are as popular as ever.
All the action of the rodeo takes place in an arena, and can be indoor or outdoor.
While there are no standard sizes for arenas, each will contain (usually at opposite
ends) the bucking chutes, and the roping chutes.
Rodeo is unique in that it is a sport made up of several different events, each with
their own style of competition and rules. While there are many events that are specific
to different regions of the U.S. and Canada.
The PBR
The total score possible for a bull ride is 100 points. Half of that total is based
on the performance of the bull and how difficult he is to ride. Judges look for bulls
with speed, power, drop in the front end, kick in the back end, directions changed and
body rolls. A body roll occurs when a bull is in the air and kicks either his hind feet
or all four feet to the side. The more of these characteristics a bull displays during a
ride, the higher the mark is for the bull. Judges are allowed to award a cowboy a re-ride
if they feel the bull did not perform at the level of other bulls in the competition and,
therefore did not give the rider a fair chance to earn a high score. Only the sport's best
bucking bulls are used at the Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Series events. PBR
Livestock Director Cody Lambert works with more than 20 stock contractors - the people who
own and lease bulls to the PBR - to ensure that the pool of bulls used at each event are the
highest caliber possible. Most Built Ford Tough Series events feature an estimated 75 bulls
that are supplied by as many as six different PBR stock contractors.
Cowboys, cowgirls and country stars!
Once again, tickets to the events of the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) the town will soon be
gearing up for the last big gathering before New Year's Eve.
The NFR has been drawing 'sell out' crowds since the late '70s, when I used
to see it at the dome of the old Las Vegas Convention Center. For the past
twenty years the Rodeo has been filling the seats of the Thomas and Mack arena.
For fourteen days of fun events, some of us will become, cowboys and cowgirls.
Stetsons and boots will be seen everywhere. Showroom and lounge headliners
will be country and western stars.
