Buckeyes Fun Facts
So what is a Buckeye anyway? It's a small, shiny, dark brown
nut with a light tan patch that comes from the official state
tree of Ohio, the buckeye tree. According to legend, possessing
a buckeye brings good luck. "Buckeyes" has been the official
Ohio State nickname since 1950, but it had been in common use
for many years prior to that.
The Buckeyes' 225-member, all-brass Ohio State Marching Band
first played in 1879 as a military band. Also called the "The
Pride of the Buckeyes," the band is famously known for its field
formations. The signature formation of the word, "Ohio," is
executed before games, during halftime, or after games. Each
time the formation drill is performed, a fourth- or fifth-year
sousaphone player has the privilege of serving as the dot in
the "i" of "Ohio." As the sousaphone player assumes the position
of honor, he bows deeply to both sides of the stadium. Bob Hope
once had the honor of dotting the "i."
"Hang On Sloopy," a song originally performed by The McCoys,
is Ohio State's game day anthem and the state of Ohio's "official
rock song." Buckeyes first heard the tune at the Oct. 9, 1965
OSU-Illinois game.
The Buckeyes call Ohio Stadium home
Ohio Stadium was built in 1922 at a cost of $1.3 million on
the banks of the Olentangy River. Local businessmen raised almost
all of the $1.3 million through private donations. Renovated
in 2001 at a cost of nearly $194 million, the double deck horseshoe-shaped
structure is now in its 83rd year as the home of Buckeye football.
With seating capacity of 101,568, Ohio Stadium is the fourth
largest on-campus facility in the country. Ohio Stadium's inaugural
game was played against Ohio Wesleyan on Oct. 7, 1922.
Thanks to a creative financing plan, no university or student
funds were used during the most recent renovation completed
in 2001. The sale of hospitality suites and club seats covered
80 percent of the cost, and the remainder was paid for with
naming-rights gifts, monies from additional ticket availability,
increased concessions, and merchandise revenues and bonds.
Today, Ohio Stadium is listed in the National Registry of Historic
Places. For more information on Ohio State football and Ohio
Stadium, visit the official Ohio
State football Website.
