- June 25, 1997: The NHL awards the city of Atlanta an expansion franchise to begin play in the 1999-2000 NHL regular season.
- February 16, 1998: The Atlanta Hockey Club, Inc. announces the "Thrashers" as the official name of the team.
- April 23, 1998: The Atlanta Thrashers unveil their official team logo in an NHL-first live Internet launch and simultaneously at the CNN Center in Atlanta.
- June 23, 1998: Don Waddell named as the club's general manager. Waddell, the second youngest GM in the NHL at 39, comes to the club from the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings, where he served as assistant general manager for the 1997-98 season.
- March 9, 1999: The Thrashers announced that a NHL-mandated 12,000 season tickets have been reached.
- March 27, 1999: The Atlanta Thrashers unveil their official home jersey in Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta.
- June 18, 1999: At 3:00 p.m. EDT, Waddell announces the acquisition of the first player in franchise history. Goaltender Damian Rhodes was acquired from the Ottawa Senators for future considerations. Rhodes compiled a 22-13-7 record, along with a 2.44 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage in 45 contests with the Senators during the 1998-99 season and helped lead the team to a second-place, regular-season finish in the Eastern Conference.
- June 21, 1999: Waddell announces that the Thrashers have acquired forward Andrew Brunette from the Nashville Predators for a conditional pick in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. During the 1998-99 season, Brunette scored 31 points (11 goals, 20 assists) in 77 games with Nashville. On October 13, 1998, Brunette scored the first goal in Nashville's franchise history.
- June 25, 1999: The Thashers take part in the 1999 NHL Expansion Draft at the FleetCenter in Boston, Mass.
- June 25, 1999: The Thrashers announce eight separate player movements following the 1999 NHL Expansion Draft. June 26, 1999: The Thrashers are involved in a four team trade that results in the Thrashers attaining the No.1 overall pick in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Atlanta acquires the pick from Vancouver (who previously received the pick from Tampa Bay in another trade) in exchange for the No. 2 pick overall and a conditional third round pick in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
- June 26, 1999: The Thrashers obtain forward Per Svartvadet from Dallas for Ottawa's sixth round pick in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft (previously acquired by Atlanta).
- June 26, 1999: With the first overall pick in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, the Thrashers select Patrik Stefan from the Long Beach Ice Dogs of the IHL, making him the first-ever player drafted by the Thrashers. In subsequent rounds, the Thrashers select Luke Sellars 30th overall, Zdenek Blatny 68th overall, David Kaczowka 98th overall, Rob Zepp 99th overall, Derek MacKenzie 128th overall, Yuri Dobryshkin 159th overall, Stephan Baby 188th overall, Garnet Exelby 217th overall, Tommi Santala 245th overall and Ray DiLauro 246th overall.
- July 14, 1999: Waddell announces that the Thrashers have hired Curt Fraser as Head Coach.
- August 2, 1999: Waddell announces the Thrashers have signed free agent center Ray Ferraro from the Los Angeles Kings.
- Sept. 11, 1999: The Thrashers beat the Nashville Predators, 3-1, in the franchise's first-ever exhibition game in Columbus, Ga.
- Sept. 18, 1999: In the first event at Philips Arena, the Thrashers lost to the New York Rangers 3-2 in OT in exhibition action.
- Oct. 2, 1999: The New Jersey Devils beat the Thrashers 4-1 in the first game in franchise history before a sold-out crowd at Philips Arena. Kelly Buchberger scored the first goal in franchise history at 11:26 of the second period.
- Oct. 9, 1999: The Thrashers tied the Buffalo Sabres 5-5 at Philips Arena to earn the first point in franchise history.
- Oct. 14, 1999: Goaltender Damian Rhodes posted the first shutout in Thrashers history as the team beat the New York Islanders 2-0 on the road for the franchise first ever victory.
- Oct. 26, 1999: The Thrashers beat the Calgary Flames 2-1 at Philips Arena for their first home victory.
- June 24-25, 2000: With the second overall pick in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, the Thrashers selected Dany Heatley from the University of Wisconsin. - Oct. 5, 2000: Named Steve Staios as second captain in team history.
- Feb. 4, 2001: Donald Audette played for the North American team as the Thrashers second NHL All-Star.
- April 6, 2001: Lost 3-2 to Carolina on the road to finish second season with a 23-45-12-2 record for 60 points, a 21-point improvement over 1999-2000.
- April 10, 2001: Won the National Hockey League Entry Draft Drawing to earn the first overall pick at the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
- Aug. 14, 2001: Signed Ilya Kovalchuk, the team's first-round selection, first overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
- Sept. 17, 2001: Announced that the Thrashers, Braves, Hawks combined to provide approximately $250,000 in relief efforts to aid victims of 9/11 tragedy.
- Sept. 18, 2001: Ray Ferraro named third captain in Thrashers history for the 2001-02 season.
- Oct. 19, 2001: Thrashers, Metro Atlanta Firefighters and Police announced a combined $800,000 raised in 9/11 relief efforts.
- June 20, 2002: Dany Heatley named as recipient of the 2001-02 Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's Rookie of the Year. Heatley and Ilya Kovalchuk named to the 2001-02 NHL's All-Rookie Team.
- June 22, 2002: Selected goaltender Kari Lehtonen of Jokerit, Finland, with the second overall choice in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft to make him the highest-drafted European goaltender in NHL draft history. Team also acquired forward Vyacheslav Kozlov from Buffalo.
- June 29, 2002: Acquired Shawn McEachern from Ottawa.
- Oct. 10, 2002: Announced four-captain rotation for the 2002-03 season that included Vyacheslav Kozlov, Uwe Krupp, Shawn McEachern and Jeff Odgers.
- Oct. 12, 2002: Thrashers opened 2002-03 season at Philips Arena that was highlighted by a post-game concert that featured Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.
- Nov. 20, 2002: Signed unrestricted free agent goaltender Byron Dafoe.
- Dec. 26 & 27, 2002: Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell dismissed Head Coach Curt Fraser and Assistant Coach Tim Bothwell. Waddell steps behind Thrashers bench as head coach for 10 games and posts franchise first victories over Carolina, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, going 4-5-1 while coaching the team on an interim basis.

- Jan. 17, 2003: Announced the discontinuation of a rotating team captaincy and named Shawn McEachern team captain.
- Feb. 2, 2003: Dany Heatley honored with NHL All-Star MVP Award after tallying four goals in 53rd annual NHL All-Star game.
- March 11, 2003: Re-signed team captain Shawn McEachern to a multi-year agreement.
- April 6, 2003: Defeated Tampa Bay 6-2 in season finale to wrap up 2002-03 season with team records for points (74), wins (31), home victories (15) and road wins (16). Players again gave Thrashers fans game-worn jerseys as part of Fan Appreciation Day.
- June 4, 2003: Signed Kari Lehtonen, the team's first-round selection, second overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
- June 21-22, 2003: Selected Braydon Coburn with the eighth overall selection in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft; acquired defenseman Ivan Majesky from Florida.
- Nov. 25, 2003: Unveiled third jersey at the team's morning skate prior to game against Ottawa at Philips Arena.
