Super Bowl I: Green Bay
vs. Kansas City
The Green Bay Packers opened the Super Bowl series by defeating
the Chiefs aided by Bart Starr's passing, Max McGee's receiving,
and an interception by all-pro safety Willie Wood. Green Bay scored
three second-half touchdowns, the first of which was made possible
by Wood's 50-yard interception return. McGee, during the regular
season, had caught only four passes. During this one game, however,
he caught seven from Starr for two touchdowns. McGee had been filling
in for Boyd Dowler, who'd been ill.
The Chiefs' only touchdown was a 7-yard pass. Green Bay ended the
game with 35 on the scoreboard. Kansas City: 10. The Packers collected
$15,000 per man and the Chiefs $7,500.
Super Bowl: Fun Facts
Lamar Hunt, the owner of the Kansas City Chiefs in 1967 stumbled
over one of his children's toys one night and stumbled across a
great idea. The toy was called a Super Ball, and Hunt thought it
would make a great name for the championship games between the NFL
and the AFL. By its third incarnation, the two league champions
would officially play in the "Supper Bowl."
The Super Bowl's National Anthem is a time-honored tradition and
has been sung by everyone from the U.S. Air Force Academy Chorale
in 1972 at Super Bowl VI, Barry Manilow in 1984 at Super Bowl XVIII,
to Beyonce Knowles in 2004 at Super Bowl XXXVIII.

ALLTELL Stadium: Site of Super Bowl XXXIX
On August 18, 1995, when the Jacksonville Jaguars played their first
game in their new stadium, it marked the first time in sports history
that an expansion team had played its first home game in its first
season in a new stadium or arena. The Jacksonville stadium was built
faster than any major-league stadium had ever been built in North
America. In the short period of 19 1/2 months, the old Gator Bowl
was demolished and a new stadium was built on the shores of the
St. Johns River. ALLTEL Stadium underwent a $46 million renovation
that was completed in 2003.
Jacksonville, Florida
The St. Johns River flows through the heart of downtown Jacksonville,
which boasts a mild year-round climate. The area is also home to
over 35 miles of sandy white beaches; more than 55 golf courses,
including the Stadium Course at Sawgrass; state parks; and many
spas and resorts. Within a short drive from downtown Jacksonville
you can visit the historical sights of St. Augustine, the stylish
island community of Amelia Island, and the beautiful Jekyll Island.
