About the
Washington Redskins
The Washington Redskins started out as the Boston Braves. George
Preston Marshall acquired an NFL franchise in 1932 and named it
the Braves after the city's Major League Baseball team and because
the team used Braves Field. After a poorly attended season in 1932,
Marshall changed the name to Redskins and moved the team to Fenway
Park. The Redskins name was retained when the team was moved to
Washington in 1937. The Washington Redskins first game in Washington
was played in Griffith Stadium on September 16, 1937. That year,
Owner Marshall produced an official Redskins marching band and fight
song--both firsts in the National Football League. The 1937 season
also saw the debut of "Slinging Sammy" Baugh, a quarterback
who forever changed pro football with his forward passing. The Redskins
won five NFL Eastern division titles and NFL championships in 1937
and 1942 during Baugh's term. In 1969, the legendary Vince Lombardi
led the Redskins to their first winning record in 15 years. For

Washington
Redskins call FedEx Field home
The Washington Redskins' FedEx Field is located in Landover, Maryland.
FedEx Field replaced RFK stadium as the home of the Redskins in
1997. The new football stadium was originally named after Washington
Redskins' former owner, Jack Kent Cooke. The Redskins played their
first game there on September 14, 1997. With 85,000 seats, Jack
Kent Cooke Stadium became the largest stadium in the NFL. In 1999,
the team was sold to Daniel Snyder. The same year, the Washington
Redskins sold the naming rights to Federal Express, and $35 million
in renovations were completed. For more information on FedEx Field,
or the Washington Redskins, visit the official Washington
Redskins Website.
