About the
Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans started out as the Houston Oilers. In 1997,
the Oilers became the first NFL team to call Tennessee home when
the franchise relocated there. Two years later, the football franchise
retired the nickname Oilers and became known as the Titans. Owner
Bud Adams formed an advisory committee to research names and created
a "Guess the Name" contest to generate enthusiasm. The
committee selected Titans citing the desire to have a nickname that
reflected "strength, leadership and other heroic qualities."
The Tennessee Titans went on to win the AFC Championship that year
and a trip to Super Bowl XXXIV. The original Houston Franchise Owner-President
K. S. "Bud" Adams Jr. was one of the founders of the American
Football League in 1959. The Titans hold the distinction of being
the AFL's first champions, winning back-to-back titles in 1960 and
1961 (as the Oilers). The Oilers missed a third straight championship
in 1962 when they lost a close game to the Dallas Texans. At the
time, the extraordinary six-quarter contest was the longest professional
football game ever played at 77 minutes, 54 seconds. For more information
on the Tennessee Titans, visit the official Tennessee
Titans Website.
Tennessee
Titans call the Coliseum home
The Tennessee Titans' Coliseum seats 68,798 fans in a state-of-the-art,
open-air, natural grass facility. The Titans share the Coliseum
with Tennessee State University. The Nashville Coliseum is situated
on 105 acres on the east bank of the Cumberland River overlooking
downtown Nashville. For nearly 30 years, the Titans played as the
Houston Oilers at Houston's Astrodome. The Titans moved into the
Coliseum on September 12, 1999. The stadium was originally known
as Adelphia Coliseum after Adelphia Communications paid $30 million
for the naming rights. Prior to the open of the 2002 NFL season,
however, the naming rights agreement was dropped and the stadium
became known as the Coliseum. It contains 144 luxury suites and
9,600 club seats. In addition to the Tennessee Titans, the Coliseum
is also home to the Tennessee State Tigers. For more information
on the Coliseum, or the Tennessee Titans, visit the official Tennessee
Titans Website.
