About the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
A Buccaneers team advisory board, with 400 possibilities to consider,
selected the name, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Florida lawyer, Hugh Culverhouse,
was awarded the National Football League's 27th franchise in 1974.
With the first kickoff scheduled for 1976, Culverhouse hired John
McKay as the coach of the Tampa Bay team. Coach McKay had achieved
great success at the University of Southern California with four
national championships. After losing a league-record 26 games, the
Buccaneers won at New Orleans on December 11, 1977. Two years later,
Tampa Bay would reach the 1979 NFC championship game in only its
fourth season. One of the hallmarks of the Buccaneers early success
was an exceptional defense led by Hall of Famer, Lee Roy Selmon,
who was the Buccaneers first draft choice and the number one pick
of the 1976 NFL draft. The Tampa Buccaneers reached the playoffs
for the second time in 1981. McKay retired as Tampa Bay's coach
following the 1984 season after nine years. For more information

Bay Buccaneers Website.
Tampa Bay
Buccaneers call Raymond James Stadium home
On September 20, 1998, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Chicago
Bears, 27-15, at the inaugural football game at Raymond James Stadium.
Raymond James Stadium is also home to the University of South Florida
football team. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers constructed a $3 million
pirate ship called Buccaneer Cove. Located at the north end of the
stadium, Buccaneer Cove covers 20,000 square feet. The Cove features
a weathered, 2-story fishing village facade from which stadium concessions
can be purchased. The centerpiece of Buccaneer Cove is its 103-foot-long
ship, an authentic replica of an early 1800's pirate ship. The most
ominous feature of the Buccaneer's ship is its 9'x7' skull and crossed
swords. The skull features huge, red glowing eyes and a smoke-breathing
mouth. Cannons celebrate Buccaneer touchdowns by releasing cannon
fire, smoke, confetti, mini-footballs and a variety of Tampa Bay
Buccaneers merchandise into the stands. For more information on
Raymond James Stadium, or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, visit the official
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Website.
