About the
San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers were the first major league professional
sports franchise on the West Coast. The 49ers entered professional
football in 1946 and were granted a National League franchise in
1950. In 1849, a celebrated rush of goldminers descended on the
San Francisco area, so the football team was aptly named the San
Francisco 49ers. It's the only name the team has every known and
San Francisco is the only city it has every called home. Anthony
J. (Tony) Morabito, a University of Santa Clara alumnus who had
been somewhat successful in the lumber hauling business was granted
a franchise for San Francisco. Morabito would later die of a heart
attack while watching the 49ers play the Chicago Bears at Kezar
Stadium. The 49ers were losing, 17-7 when they were informed of
Tony's death. They fought back for a 21-17 upset victory, foiling
many Chicago touchdown assaults in the fourth period. After Tony
died, control of the club passed on to his widow and his brother,
Victor. For more information on the San Francisco 49ers, visit the
official San Francisco
49ers Website.
San Francisco
49ers call 3Com Park home
3Com Park has been the home of the San Francisco 49ers since 1971.
In 1954, San Francisco Mayor George Christopher promised to build
a stadium if a major league team would relocate in the area. The
New York Giants (MLB) decided to move to the west coast after the
1957 season. The land at Candlestick Point, situated near the San
Francisco Bay, was chosen because of its economical price tag. The
stadium was then appropriately named Candlestick Park. The Giants
played the first game ever at Candlestick Park in 1961 while the
49ers played at Kezar Stadium (where they'd been since 1946). The
49ers would not play at Candlestick Park until October 10, 1971.
In 1995, Candlestick Park was renamed 3Com Park. 3Com Park looks
very much like the Candlestick Park of 1971 as very few changes
have been made. For more information on 3Come Park or the San Francisco
49ers, visit the official San
Francisco 49ers Website.
