About the
San Diego Chargers
The San Diego Chargers came to be on August 14, 1959, when Barron
Hilton, a 32-year-old hotel executive, was awarded a Los Angeles
franchise in the American Football League. Frank Ready, the Chargers'
general manager, picked the Chargers name because he liked the way
fans yelled "charge" at Dodger Stadium and at USC games.
The Chargers played in Los Angeles in 1960 and moved to San Diego
in 1961. Even though they won the AFL Western division championship
in 1960, the Los Angeles Chargers received little fan support there.
Owner Hilton, supported by San Diego sportswriter Jack Murphy, moved
his team to San Diego in 1961. Balboa Stadium was expanded to accommodate
the football team and seat 34,000 Chargers fans. In San Diego, the
Chargers, under coach Sid Gillman, matured into high-scoring, crowd-pleasing
juggernauts that won the AFL title with a 51-10 win over Boston
in 1963. Chargers greats Gillman, Lance Alworth and Ron Mix are
now members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Hilton sold the Chargers
to Eugene V. Klein in 1966. Klein sold the team to Alex G. Spanos,
a Stockton, California businessman, in 1984. Spanos is the current
Chairman of the Board. For more information on the San Diego Chargers,

San Diego
Chargers call Qualcomm Stadium home
The San Diego Charges are currently looking into the possibility
of building a new stadium in their home city. For now, the Chargers
are where they've been since 1967: Qualcomm Stadium. San Diego sportswriter
Jack Murphy fostered support for a new multipurpose stadium in the
city in the early 1960's. His efforts paid off in 1965 when a $27
million bond was passed for a new stadium for the San Diego Chargers
and a future MLB team. Once completed, the 50,000-seat, horseshoe-shaped
stadium was christened, San Diego Stadium, and the Chargers played
their first game there on August 20, 1967. The Padres began playing
baseball there two years later in 1969. Sportswriter Jack Murphy
died in 1981 and the stadium was named in honor of him for the next
16 years. In 1997, major renovation was completed to enclose most
of the Chargers' stadium, and nearly 11,000 additional seats were
added. Also in 1997, the facility was renamed Qualcomm Stadium after
Qualcomm Corporation paid $18 million for the naming rights. With
over 100 luxury seats and 7,000 club seats, the San Diego Chargers
are now the sole tenant. The Padres have since moved to Petco Park.
