Aloha Stadium: Site of
the NFL Pro Bowl
The 50,000-seat stadium officially opened on September 12, 1975.
The first football game was held at Aloha Stadium on September 13,
1975 between the University of Hawaii and Texas A & I. The stadium
features a unique air cushion movement system that makes it possible
to relocate four 7,000-seat sections into three different configurations:
a diamond for baseball (doubling as a wide rectangle for soccer);
an oval for football; and a triangle for concerts and other stage
events. This type of movement system is the first of its kind in
the U.S. Aloha Stadium is the home of the University of Hawaii's
Warriors football team. In addition to playing host to football,
the stadium hosts baseball, soccer, boxing, religious and music
festivals, swap meets, auto shows, motorcrossess, mud races, tractor
pulls, concerts, and carnivals.
About the NFL
The National Football League (NFL) has 32 teams and has its roots
in two sports: soccer and rugby. In the late 1800's, a great rugby
player from Yale, Walter Camp, pioneered rules changes that slowly
transformed those sports into the game we know of today as American
football.
The NFL was formed in 1920 under the name, American Professional
Football Association, or APFA. In 1922, the name changed to the
National Football League, or NFL. For more information on the NFL,
visit the official
NFL Website.
