About the Pittsburg Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers were founded by Arthur J. Rooney on July
8, 1933. As the sixth-oldest franchise in the NFL, the Pittsburg
team was originally named after the city's major league baseball
team, the Pirates. In 1940, Rooney changed the name to the Steelers
to celebrate the city's dominant steel industry. For their first
40 years, the Steelers did not win a championship. In 1972, they
won the AFC Central division title. Only two years later, Rooney,
an incredibly popular sports figure, received the Vince Lombardi
Trophy after the Pittsburg Steelers' victory in Super Bowl IX. After
many years of frustration, the 1970s Pittsburg Steelers began an
extraordinary winning streak, winning eight consecutive playoff
berths, seven AFC Central titles and four AFC championships. The
Steelers became the first team to win four Super Bowls and the only
team to win back-to-back Super Bowls twice. The Pittsburg Steelers
logo is based on the Steelmark logo belonging to the American Iron
and Steel Institute (AISI). Created by U.S. Steel Corp. (now known
as USX Corp.), the logo includes three hypocycloids (diamond shapes).

Pittsburg
Steelers call Heinz Field home
The Pittsburg Steelers spent 30 years alongside the Pittsburg Pirates
(MLB) at Three Rivers Stadium. Construction on two new stadiums
along the Ohio River for the Steelers and the Pirates began in 1999.
As part of a 20 year joint venture with the Heinz Company, the Steelers
named their stadium Heinz Field. The Pittsburg Steelers played their
inaugural game at Heinz Field on October 7, 2001. Heinz Field is
in the shape of a horseshoe which gives fans an excellent view of
the Pittsburg skyline. It seats 64,450 football fans and boasts
7,000 club seats and 120 luxury suites. As is the practice of many
teams today, the Steelers received public funding to build their
new stadium. For more information on Heinz Field or the Pittsburg
Steelers, visit the official Pittsburg
Steelers Website.
