About the Oakland Raiders
For a brief period, the AFL team was known as the Senors, but by
start of the 1960 season, the Oakland team had become the Raiders.
The origin of the Raiders name is not known, but more than likely,
the nickname was chosen by principal owner Chet Soda and his partners.
The Oakland Raiders became the eighth member of the new American
Football League in January 1960, when they were selected as a replacement
for the Minneapolis franchise, which defected to the National Football
League. The Oakland Raiders record for the first three years was
9-33-0. Average home attendance was just under 11,000. In 1963,
the Raiders hired Al Davis as their new head coach and the tide
changed dramatically. From a 1-13 mark in 1962, the Raiders improved
to 10-4 in 1963. Davis was named the AFL Coach of the Year. The
early Oakland Raiders owe much to Davis, who left the team only
briefly for a term as AFL commissioner in 1966. For more information

Raiders Website.
Oakland Raiders
call Networks Associates Coliseum home
Home of the Oakland Raiders since 1966, Network Associates Coliseum
was built deep in the ground, permitting football fans to enter
on the upper deck. Prior to moving into the coliseum, the Oakland
Raiders played at Frank Youell Field, which held about 20,000 football
fans. Oakland officials first proposed the construction of a new
stadium in order to attract a baseball and football team in the
mid 1940's. It wasn't until 1960 that a site was chosen near the
C.W. Nimitz Freeway, and construction began two years later. The
stadium was named Oakland Coliseum. The Raiders were the sole tenant
of the coliseum for two years until 1968, when the Kansas City A's
(MLB) moved to Oakland and began playing there. The Oakland Raiders
moved to the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1981. In November 1995, a $200
million facelift added over 22,000 seats to the stadium, and the
Raiders moved back into the coliseum the next season. In 1998, the
Oakland Coliseum was renamed Network Associates Coliseum. For more
information on Networks Associates Coliseum, or the Oakland Raiders,
