About the
New York Jets
The history of the New York Jets involves the story of two distinct
football organizations: the Titans and the Jets. Harry Wismer was
granted a charter AFL franchise in New York in 1959. When Titans
ownership changed from Wismer to a five-man group headed by David
"Sonny" Werblin in 1963, player personnel went with the
franchise. They were a bankrupt team when Werblin's group purchased
the franchise for $1,000,000, changed the name to the New York Jets,
and hired Weeb Ewbank as head coach. Werblin changed the name to
the Jets to reflect his modern management style and the dazzling
performances he hoped his team would produce. Ewbank, who had achieved
championship success with the Baltimore Colts in the 1950s, began
to re-build the team. His efforts received a major boost on January
2, 1965 when the New York Jets signed Alabama quarterback Joe Namath.
Under the direction of Ewbank, the Jets would later stun the sports
world with a 16-7 victory over the highly-favored Baltimore Colts
in Super Bowl III. That Super Bowl is considered one of the two
most important games toward building fan enthusiasm for pro football.

New York
Jets call Giants Stadium home
In 1964, the New York Jets moved from Polo Grounds to Shea Stadium,
where the Jets set an AFL attendance mark of 45,665 in the season
opener against the Denver Broncos. Today, the New York Jets play
at Giants Stadium. Built in the Meadowlands, across from New York
City in East Rutherford, New Jersey, construction started on the
stadium in 1972, and it opened in 1976. Named after the NFL franchise
of the same name, Giants Stadium seats 80,062 football fans. The
New York Jets may soon have a stadium of their own. If New York
City lands the 2012 Olympics, the New York Sports and Convention
Center will, more than likely, be the Jets new home. If built, the
stadium will be built downtown, on the upper west side. For more
information on the New York Sports and Convention Center, Giants
Stadium, or the New York Jets, visit the official New
York Jets Website.
