About the
New York Giants
The New York Giants' debut was also the debut for professional football
in the city of New York. In October of 1925 the New York Giants
took to the field against the Frankford Yellow Jackets. The Giants
lost that game 14-0. Earlier that year, Tim Mara, now a member of
the Pro Football Hall of Fame, had purchased the franchise for $500.
In an era when professional football was in the shadows of baseball,
boxing and college football, league officials believed that a team
in a large market like New York would keep pro football alive. Before
the Giants' first season ended, Mara invested another $25,000 to
keep the team alive. Tim Mara "borrowed" the New York
Giants name from the city's Major League Baseball team of the same
name. This was not unusual among early day professional football
franchises. Tim Mara would later hand control of the franchise over
to his two sons, Jack, who was twenty-two, and Wellington, age fourteen.
50% of the club is now owned by Preston Robert Tisch, a native New
Yorker and lifelong New York Giants fan. For more information on

New York
Giants call Giants Stadium home
After calling four different stadiums home, the New York Giants
moved into Giants Stadium in 1976. In May of 1967, a local New Jersey
newspaper first proposed the construction of a Sports Complex. The
Giants were also interested in building a larger stadium as they
were playing in an aging Yankee Stadium at the time. The original
construction idea called for separate stadiums for football and
baseball with convenient parking and easy highway access just miles
from New York City. On Aug. 27, 1971, the Giants signed a 30-year
lease for a 75,000-seat stadium to be built by the 1975 season.
Construction of the Giants' stadium began in 1972. The football
team made their debut in Giants Stadium on Oct. 10, 1976 against
the Dallas Cowboys before a sellout crowd. Giants Stadium is only
7 miles from Times Square. For more information on Giants Stadium
