About the
New Orleans Saints
On November 1, 1966, the National Football League awarded its 16th
franchise to New Orleans. It was All Saints Day, so the name "Saints"
was the popular choice in an early fan contest. On March 8th, the
New Orleans Saints launched their first season-ticket drive which
produced 20,000 sales on opening day alone. Eager to create as much
fan enthusiasm as possible in a city not used to pro football, the
Saints obtained three future Pro Football Hall of Famers: Paul Hornung
and Jim Taylor, and defensive end Doug Atkins. The New Orleans Saints
opened the regular season on Sept. 17, 1967 against the Los Angeles
Rams before a packed house of 80,879 in Tulane Stadium. New Orleans
Saints fans went wild for John Gilliam's 94-yard touchdown return
during the opening kickoff. The Saints made each home game a special
event with cheerleaders, jazz bands, precision-marching routines,
and weekly appearances by "The King" himself -- part-owner,
chief cheerleader and trumpet player, Al Hirt. For more information

Orleans Saints Website.
New Orleans
Saints call the Louisiana Superdome home
Construction on future home of the New Orleans Saints began on August
11, 1971. The Louisiana Superdome opened just two years later. It
boasts the world's largest steel-constructed room unobstructed by
posts, and was the first privately-managed, publicly-owned arena.
The New Orleans Saints' Superdome boasts more Super Bowls than any
other facility to date (6, including the most recent in 2002). The
Superdome, however, is more than just the home of the New Orleans
Saints. In fact, the world record for number of attendees at an
indoor concert - 87,500 - was achieved when the Rolling Stones played
there in 1981. Pope John Paul II addressed 80,000 school children
at the New Orleans stadium in September, 1987. The Superdome is
located on Sugar Bowl Drive in New Orleans. For more information
on the Louisiana Superdome or the New Orleans Saints, visit the
official New
Orleans Saints Website.
