About the
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots' first home was Boston. Businessman Billy
Sullivan Jr. secured the eighth American Football League franchise
on November 22, 1959, and the team was quickly named the "Boston
Patriots." Shortly after the name was chosen, Boston Globe
artist Phil Bissell drew a cartoon of a Minuteman preparing to snap
a football. The Patriots owner liked the drawing so much that he
selected "Pat Patriot" as the team logo. The football
team's name wouldn't change to the New England Patriots until 1971.
The Patriots' first training camp opened on July 4, 1960 at University
of Massachusetts at Amherst. Approximately 350 Patriots hopefuls
reported to the opening of camp, including a large group from Boston
College. This group would be trimmed to 35 for the start of the
regular football season. The team's first preseason game was held
on July 30 and the Patriots defeated the Buffalo Bills 28-7 at War
Memorial Stadium in Buffalo. Patriots defensive end Bob Dee recovered
a fumble during the game and scored the AFL's first touchdown. The
team's regular season home opener came on September 9 at Boston
University field and the Patriots lost to the Denver Broncos 13-10.

New England Patriots call Gillette Stadium home
During the New England Patriots' first decade, finding an appropriate
playing field in the Boston area was a difficult. The Patriots have
played at Boston University Field, Harvard, and even Fenway Park,
the Red Sox baseball stadium. The New England Patriots now call
Gillette Stadium home. Located at One Patriot Place in Foxborough,
MA, Gillette is also the home of the New England Revolution (MLS).
Its Grand Opening was on September 9, 2002 when the Patriots beat
the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football. Gillette Stadium
has a large number of features that pay homage to the New England
Patriots' heritage. These features include a 12-story high lighthouse
that sits atop the Fleet entrance and welcomes visitors to the stadium.
Plazas, allowing guests to enjoy the atmosphere, border the stadium.
Gillette Stadium seats 68,000 New England Patriots fans. For more
information on Gillette Stadium or the New England Patriots, visit
the official New
England Patriots Website.
