About the
Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings' story began in August 1959, when five Minnesota
businessmen were awarded a franchise in the new American Football
League. Five months later, in January 1960, the same ownership group
forfeited its AFL membership and was awarded the National Football
League's 14th franchise. Bert Rose, the first general manager of
the Minnesota Vikings, selected the Vikings name because so many
people in Minnesota and the surrounding area traced their heritage
to Scandinavia. The Minnesota Vikings had a spectacular debut in
their first game on September 17, 1961. Rookie Fran Tarkenton made
an amazing debut when he threw four touchdown passes and ran for
a fifth score to lead his Vikings to a 37-13 defeat over the Chicago
Bears. Tarkenton would later become the first Vikings player to
be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. For more information

Vikings Website.
Minnesota
Vikings call the Metrodome home
After spending more than two decades at Metropolitan Stadium, the
Minnesota Vikings and the Twins (MLB) decided it was time for a
new stadium. Built in the mid 1950's, Metropolitan Stadium was beginning
to deteriorate. The Minnesota Vikings' Metrodome opened on April
3, 1982 and cost $55 Million to build. The playing surface is Astroturf
and the roof is made out of 10 acres of Teflon-coated fiberglass.
20 electric fans keep the roof in its famous billowing shape, which
requires 250,000 cubic feet of air pressure per minute to remain
inflated. The Dome's roof has snow melting ducts to prevent a collapse.
The first football game played in the Metrodome was on August 21,
1982, and the final score was Minnesota Vikings: 7, Seattle Seahawks:
3. Seating capacity for Vikings' football games is 64,121. The Metrodome
is one of the easiest stadiums to be converted from a baseball to
a football field, with the entire process taking only around four
hours. For more information on the Metrodome, visit the official
Minnesota Vikings
Website.
