About the
Miami Dolphins
In 1967, the Miami Dolphins' pro football history began as the ninth
member of the American Football League. A fan contest drew 19,843
entries to name the AFL expansion team from Miami, and a total of
622 contestants suggested "Dolphins." Mariners, Marauders,
Mustangs, Missiles, Moons, Sharks, and Suns were just some of the
other names suggested during that contest. Founder and Team owner
Joe Robbie said he liked the name "Dolphins" because,
"The dolphin is one of the fastest and smartest creatures in
the sea." The Miami Dolphins became the only National Football
League team ever to record a perfect season. The 1972 Dolphins won
the AFC Eastern division and AFC championships and then defeated
the Washington Redskins 14-7 in Super Bowl VII for a flawless 17-0-0
record. The Joe Robbie era ended with his death on January 7, 1990.
Early in 1994, the NFL approved the acquisition of the Dolphins
by H. Wayne Huizenga, a Florida sportsman. For more information

Miami Dolphins
call Pro Player Stadium home
The Miami Dolphins' first home was the Orange Bowl in Miami. But
Founder and Team Owner Joseph Robbie wanted a privately-funded stadium
and, on August 16, 1987, he unveiled Joe Robbie Stadium for the
Miami Dolphins preseason game against the Chicago Bears. The game
also marked the 22nd anniversary of the Dolphins franchise. The
75,000 seat, $115 million state-of-the-art, open-air facility was
the first of its kind at the time to be constructed with private
funds. Robbie revolutionized the economics of professional sports
when it opened. Inclusion of a Club Level and Executive Suites helped
to finance the construction. Miami Dolphins season ticket holders
committed to long term agreements, and in return, received first-class
amenities. On August 26, 1996, Pro Player, the sports apparel division
of Fruit of the Loom, sponsored the renaming of Joe Robbie Stadium.
