About the
Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs began in 1960 as the Dallas Texans. When
the football team moved to Kansas City in 1963, the new name was
selected by a fan contest. In 1959, a 26-year-old Texan, frustrated
by his unsuccessful attempts to acquire a pro football franchise
in the National Football League, embarked on a course changed pro
football forever. The man was Lamar Hunt, who founded the American
Football League, and served as the league's first president. Hunt's
own team, the Dallas Texans, was located in his hometown where he
would face direct competition from the Dallas Cowboys. Although
the Texans performed well in Dallas, Hunt decided that it would
be best to move to Kansas City in 1963. The Chiefs later became
the first team to represent the AFL in Super Bowl competition. For

City Chiefs Website.
Kansas City
Chiefs call Arrowhead Stadium home
After several years at an aging Municipal Stadium, the Kansas City
Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals (MLB) began work on a new stadium.
In the late 1960's, Kansas City chose to construct two separate
stadiums, one for football and one for baseball. Arrowhead was the
result of over three years of construction that gave the Chiefs
a stadium that was well ahead of its time. The Kansas City Chiefs
and St. Louis Cardinals played the inaugural game at Arrowhead Stadium
on August 12, 1972. In 1984, officials discussed adding a dome to
Arrowhead Stadium, but this plan was cancelled because of mounting
project costs. In 1994, Arrowhead's Astroturf was replaced with
grass. The Chief's stadium holds 78,097 Kansas City fans. For more
information on Arrowhead Stadium, visit the official Kansas
City Chiefs Website.
