About the
Jacksonville Jaguars
In November of 1993, Jacksonville was awarded the 30th franchise
in the National Football League. The next month, 25,000 Jacksonville
Jaguars fans battled cold and rain with Jaguars officials, city
officials and community leaders for a victory celebration in the
Gator Bowl. The Jaguars played their first-ever game in Canton,
Ohio in the annual AFC-NFC Hall of Fame Game. Their opponent in
the pre-season classic was the NFL's other new expansion franchise,
the Carolina Panthers. The Jacksonville Jaguars are an incredibly
successful expansion franchise. The Jacksonville team won 49 games
in their first five seasons, including an NFL-best record of 14-2
in 1999. The Jaguars name was selected through a fan contest. Finalists
for the name included the Sharks, Stingrays and even Panthers. For
more information on the Jacksonville Jaguars, visit the official
Jacksonville Jaguars
Website.
Jacksonville
Jaguars call ALLTELL Stadium home
On August 18, 1995, when the Jacksonville Jaguars played their first
game in their new stadium, it marked the first time in sports history
that an expansion team had played its first home game in its first
season in a new stadium or arena. The Jacksonville stadium was built
faster than any major-league stadium had ever been built in North
America. In the short period of 19 1/2 months, the old Gator Bowl
was demolished and a new stadium was built on the shores of the
St. Johns River. ALLTEL Stadium underwent a $46 million renovation
that was completed in 2003. Among the additions is a Terrace Suite
for 700 Jacksonville Jaguars fans, a 25,000-square-foot sports bar
called the Bud Zone, and a 20,000-square-foot patio. The Jaguars'
Stadium seats 76,877, but additional seats are added for the annual
Florida-Georgia game. For more information on ALLTELL Stadium, visit
the official Jacksonville
Jaguars Website.
