About the Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts haven't always been in Indianapolis. In 1953,
the city of Baltimore was awarded a National Football League franchise,
and the team was nicknamed the Colts. On January 23, 1953, Carroll
Rosenbloom became the principal owner of the new Baltimore Colts.
The next year, Weeb Ewbank was named the Colts' head coach. Powered
by an exciting young quarterback, Johnny Unitas, and a strong supporting
team that included future Pro Football Hall of Famers Artie Donovan,
Gino Marchetti, Raymond Berry, Lenny Moore and Jim Parker, the Colts
won NFL championships in 1958, 1959 and 1968. Robert Irsay traded
the Los Angeles Rams for the Colts in 1972. Twelve years later on
March 28, 1984, Irsay moved the Colts to Indianapolis, where they
now play in the RCA Dome. For more information on the Indianapolis
Colts, visit the official Indianapolis
Colts Website.
Indianapolis Colts call the RCA Dome home
Unlike most domed stadiums, the RCA Dome, located in the heart of
downtown Indianapolis, opened in 1984 as part of an expansion of
the convention center, not as a stand-alone sports venue. Opening
as the Hoosier Dome at a cost of $77.5 million, the facility immediately
became home to the Indianapolis Colts. The Indianapolis Colts' first
game at the RCA Dome was on September 2, 1984. The roof of the stadium
consists of Teflon coated fiberglass. Football seating capacity
is 57,890 and the Dome has an artificial turf playing surface. In
addition to hosting Indianapolis Colts action, the facility is booked
year-round with numerous events. The RCA Dome is one of four major
air-supported stadiums including the Pontiac Silverdome, the Metrodome
in Minnesota and the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York. For more
information on the RCA Dome, visit the official Indianapolis
Colts Website.
