About the Detroit Lions
After three unsuccessful attempts to bring a professional football
team to Detroit in the 1920s, the game took a firm foothold in the
city in 1934. That year, Detroit radio executive George A. Richards
purchased the Portsmouth, Ohio, Spartans for the sum of $8,000 and
moved the franchise to the Motor City. The new Lions team boasted
some of the finest players of the day. Detroit Lions' team leader
Dutch Clark, who was the last NFL dropkicker, became a charter member
of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Lions made their lasting mark
by scheduling a Thanksgiving Day game in their first season in 1934
and, except for a gap between 1939 and 1944, continue the tradition
today. Other NFL teams have tried Turkey Day games, and except for
the Dallas Cowboys, without much success. Playing in the University
of Detroit Stadium before crowds of 12,000, the Lions won the NFL
championship in their second year, 1935. Since then, the Detroit
Lions have been an integral part of the Michigan sports scene. The
Lions are led by Chairman William Clay Ford, who in 1964 purchased
sole ownership of the Lions for $4,500,000. For more information

Lions Website.
Detroit Lions call Ford Field home
The Detroit team moved from the University of Detroit Stadium to
Briggs Field, home of the baseball Tigers, in 1938, where they stayed
for 37 years. In 1975, the Lions moved into the Pontiac Silverdome
where they played for another 37 years. In 2002, the team moved
back to downtown Detroit and into the new domed stadium, Ford Field.
The Lions' home is a 65,000-seat facility that includes a giant
glass wall, revealing the Detroit skyline, and the old Hudson's
Warehouse, originally built in 1920. The Detroit Lions' stadium
encompasses a total of 1.85 million square feet. The old Hudson's
Warehouse, a major cornerstone of Ford Field, houses luxury seats,
the press box, restaurants, food courts, lounge areas, banquet facilities,
entertainment venues and commercial space. Detroit played its first
home preseason game at Ford Field on August 24, 2002 against the
Pittsburgh Steelers. For more information on Ford Field, visit the
official Detroit
Lions Website.
