About the
Cleveland Browns
Many believe that the Cleveland Browns were named after the popular
boxing champion, Joe Louis, a.k.a. "The Brown Bomber."
According to the Browns, however, the team was named after the extremely
popular head coach, Paul Brown. When owner Arthur McBride brought
an AAFC team to Cleveland in 1945, he held a naming contest and
offered a $1,000 war bond to the winner. Many of the entries suggested
the name "Browns." Coach Brown, however, thought it wouldn't
be proper to name the team after him, so the entry "Panthers"
was chosen instead. A few weeks later, McBride learned that the
rights to name "Cleveland Panthers" were already taken.
Coach Brown reluctantly agreed to the name "Browns." In
public, however, the humble Coach Brown declared that the team was
named after Louis, "The Brown Bomber." It should be noted
that not a single contest entry listed Louis or his nickname as
a reason for choosing "Browns." For more information on

Cleveland
Browns Stadium
In Cleveland, the Cleveland Browns Stadium is considered a lakefront
landmark. It's next to North Coast Harbor, which includes the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame, the Great Lakes Science Center and the glass-enclosed
stations of the RTA Waterfront Line. Cleveland Browns Stadium seats
over 73,000 Browns fans, which includes over 10,000 "Dawg Pound
Seats" (bleacher seating) and 147 Luxury Suites. The Cleveland
stadium cost in excess of $290 million with contributions from the
city, state, county, Regional Transit Authority, Cleveland Browns
and Cleveland Tomorrow funds. The Browns play on a field of Kentucky
Bluegrass which is irrigated with a sand-soil root zone and an underground
heating system. This heating system keeps the field from freezing
and extends the growing season of the turf. For more information
on Cleveland Browns Stadium, visit the official Cleveland
Browns Website.
