About the Atlanta Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons were founded on June 30, 1965. At that time,
Rankin Smith, a young insurance executive, had controlling ownership
of the new football team from Atlanta. In a contest to determine
the team's name, several people suggested "Falcons", but
a school teacher named Miss Julia Elliott was selected winner in
part because of how she described the falcon: "The falcon is
proud and dignified, with great courage and fight. It never drops
prey. It is deadly and has a great sporting tradition." By
December of 1965, when the Atlanta Falcons cut off a brief 54-day
ticket sale requiring little promotion, an NFL record had been established
for season tickets sold by a new club (45,000). For more information

In 1992, the Atlanta Falcons and the state of Georgia unveiled the
Georgia Dome. Atlanta's Dome is the largest cable-supported domed
stadium in the world. It features a unique Teflon-coated Fiberglas
roof that lets in natural light. The Dome seats 71,500 Atlanta Falcons
fans when configured for football. A pair of C-5 military transport
planes could fit on its floor! The Georgia Dome has been host to
many of the largest sporting events in the world including Super
Bowls XXXIV and XXVIII and the1996 Centennial Olympic Games. For
