The air was thick with anticipation as the inaugural Ford Motor City Bowl kicked off on December 26, 1997 at the Pontiac Silverdome.

The Marshall Thundering Herd, fresh from its 1996 NCAA I-AA National Championship, came out of the blocks in its first season of 1-A competition in full-sprint - capturing the Mid-American Conference championship in convincing fashion behind a dazzling aerial attack that featured receiving phenom Randy Moss. As a result, the 10-2 MAC Champs landed the school's first bowl appearance in 50 years.

Ole Miss, one of the best teams in the Southeastern Conference, was coming off a successful 8-4 season that included victories over LSU, Arkansas, and Mississippi State. As the Motor City Bowl approached, the Rebels were relishing the chance to test the mettle of the upstart Herd and its heralded Heisman Trophy candidate Randy Moss.

The Rebels, the Silverdome crowd and a national TV audience would not have to wait long for the first salvos in the ensuing confrontation.

On the game's second play from scrimmage, Ole Miss running back John Avery scored the Motor City Bowl's first-ever touchdown; only to be answered on the very next offensive play, when quarterback Chad Pennington hit a streaking Randy Moss down the sideline for an 87-yard Marshall touchdown that still stands as the longest in bowl history.

Before the night was over, the crowd had witnessed a memorable offensive explosion that see-sawed back and forth all night, culminating in Ole Miss running back Deuce McAllister's winning touchdown run with just 31 seconds on the clock.

In a game that featured four future first-round draft picks, a Heisman Trophy finalist, and a myriad of spectacular plays, the Rebels of Ole Miss edged a feisty and talented Marshall team 34-31. In the end, the inaugural Motor City Bowl proved to be the most exciting bowl game of the year.
