One of the nation's most respected coaches, Gene Keady is in his 25th and final season at the helm of the Purdue basketball program.
The 2004-05 season will be a year-long celebration of Keady's 25 years with the Boilermakers.
During the 2003-04 season, Keady was named one of 16 finalists for the Basketball Hall of Fame. He also earned his 500th win at Purdue on Jan. 14 and became Purdue's all-time-winningest coach on Dec. 6, 1997. In 24 years at Purdue, Keady has notched 505 victories.
With six Big Ten championships and six national coach of the year awards (second-most by any coach), his record speaks for itself. He is the Big Ten's third-winningest coach all-time by percentage (.661), and is second in victories (262).
Keady has led Purdue to six Big Ten championships (1984, 1987, 1988, 1994, 1995 and 1996) in 24 years, including three straight outright titles from 1994 to 1996. That feat has been accomplished by only one other team -- Ohio State from 1960 to 1962.
Purdue has finished in the upper division of the Big Ten 18 times during Keady's tenure. The Boilermakers finished second in the league in 1983, 1990 and 1997.
He has been named Big Ten coach of the year a record seven times (1984, 1988, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 2000), tying former Indiana coach Bob Knight for the most all-time selections. Keady is the only coach to win the award three straight years. A basketball coaching legend, Keady has spent more than 50 years in and around the game of basketball. Along the way, he has crossed paths with countless coaches and players, numerous fans and even a few celebrities. About the Stadium
Mackey Arena is the home of the Purdue men's and women's basketball teams. Purdue Arena, as the facility was known for its first five years of existence, was built at a cost of $6 million. Dedicated on Dec. 2, 1967, the building was renamed in 1972 in honor of the late Athletics Director Guy 'Red' Mackey.
On Dec. 12, 1997, the floor of Mackey Arena was named " Keady Court" in honor of legendary men's basketball coach Gene Keady.
Mackey Arena features 42 rows of seats, with a slight parabolic curve from the bottom row to the top. The ground and main floors contain 56,000 square feet of offices, equipment rooms and locker rooms. The playing floor sits 17 feet below grade level. The height from the arena floor to the aluminum dome roof is 97 feet.
In addition to housing the perennially successful men's and women's basketball programs, Mackey Arena is home to the volleyball team locker room, the wrestling team practice room, and the "VIP" conference room, which plays host to numerous meetings, gatherings and press conferences throughout the year.
More than just a sports facility, Mackey also houses the staff offices for men's and women's basketball, men's and women's track and field, men's and women's cross country, promotions and sports information. The main training room and equipment room are located in the basement of Mackey Arena.
Mackey Arena is located on Northwestern Ave., just north of Stadium Drive.
