About Oklahoma UniversityBasketball
In a poll that almost mirrors that of Big 12 men’s basketball coaches two weeks ago, conference media representatives picked the Oklahoma Sooners to finish in fourth place this season. OU received 136 points in the poll and was slotted behind Kansas (176), Oklahoma State (166) and Texas (148).
Trailing Oklahoma in the poll were Missouri (116), Iowa State (104), Texas Tech (96), Kansas State (65), Nebraska (62), Colorado (52), Texas A&M (33) and Baylor (25).
As he was last week by the league’s coaches, OU junior forward Taj Gray was a unanimous media choice as the Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Gray earned first-team National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association All-America honors and was the runner-up in NJCAA Player of the Year voting after averaging 18.1 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.3 blocked shots as a sophomore. He led Redlands to the junior college national title game.
Fellow OU junior forward Kevin Bookoutwas one of seven Big 12 players who earned media votes for the Preseason All-Big 12 Team. Bookout, 6-8 and 259 pounds, is healthy after missing last season’s final 17 games due to shoulder surgery. He has led the Sooners in rebounding average and field goal percentage the last two seasons.
The five-person All-Big 12 Team consists of Kansas’ Keith Langford and Wayne Simien, Iowa State’s Curtis Stinson and Oklahoma State’s Joey Graham and John Lucas. Simien was voted as the Preseason Player of the Year.
Honored as the Preseason Freshman of the Year was Texas guard Daniel Gibson.
A limited number of OU season tickets are still available by contacting the Athletics Ticket Office at (405) 325-2424 or (800) 456-GoOU. The Sooners play two home exhibition games (Nov. 10 and 13) before beginning the regular season with a home game against Cal State Northridge on Nov. 20 at noon.
About the Stadium
It's known as the house Alvan Adams built and Wayman Tisdale filled. It's also where Billy Tubbs resurrected Oklahoma basketball. Now, Kelvin Sampson, who has guided OU to a remarkable 133-20 (.869) record in 10 years inside the arena, calls the building home.
Dedicated in 1975, Lloyd Noble Center has become one of the top sports arenas in the country, featuring excellent seating and some of the best college basketball in the nation. Since its opening, nearly four million fans have come through the LNC doors looking for a Sooner victory.
Under head coach Billy Tubbs, Oklahoma built a 182-26 record inside Lloyd Noble Center and was undefeated at home in five of his last 11 seasons. Over the last 294 home encounters, the Sooners have posted 261 victories for a remarkable .888 winning percentage. Included in that stretch is a school-record 51-game winning streak and a 37-game streak that ended last year.
And the best continues to get better at Lloyd Noble Center as the $17.1 million expansion and renovation project came to a close in 2001. The improvements resulted in one of the finest basketball facilities in the country. Other building amenities include a multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art video scoreboard that debuted in 1997. It was the first video board in the Big 12 Conference. Additionally, attractive display cases highlighting the careers of Sooner greats Alvan Adams and Wayman Tisdale, as well as OU's four Final Four appearances and Sooners drafted by NBA teams, are featured on the east and north walls of the building's main concourse.
The Sooners continue to host many of college basketball's most successful teams and, as a result, stretch attendance marks. In 2003-04, Oklahoma home games attracted 204,041 fans for an average of 12,002 per contest. The 19 largest crowds in Lloyd Noble Center history have been recorded since Sampson became head coach in 1994.
