About the NCAA
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a voluntary
association of about 1,200 colleges and universities, athletic conferences
and sports organizations devoted to the administration of college
athletics. In 1905, Chancellor Henry M. MacCracken of New York University
held a meeting with 13 institutions to bring about changes in college
Basketball playing rules. Before the end of the year, the Intercollegiate
Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS) would be formed.
The IAAUS took its present name, NCAA, in 1910. In 1921, the first
NCAA national championship was held: the National Collegiate Track
and Field Championships. The NCAA began overseeing women's athletics
programs in 1980. Today, the national office staff of the NCAA houses
350 employees in Indianapolis. For more information on the NCAA
and college basketball, visit the official NCAA
