About the Team
From the first campaign in &68-69 to the present, the Phoenix Suns have had some tremendously successful and memorable teams throughout the years. With the arrivals of Connie Hawkins, Paul Silas and Neal Walk, in 1969-70, the Suns& landed in the playoffs in only their second season of existence, and managed to give the mighty Lakers all they could handle. The beauty of the 1975-76 season for the Phoenix Suns was in the fact that, even at midseason, the end result hardly seemed possible. The Suns opened perhaps their most exciting season by wining 14 of their first 23 games. In the second to last game of the regular season, the team clinched its first playoff berth in six years by defeating the L.A. Lakers, 113-98, at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. That game also marked the Suns& first sellout at the Coliseum in three years. Despite several changes to the Suns roster in the 1980-81 season, and questions surrounding the moves, the Suns captured their first-ever division championship. 1984-85 brought the Suns’ trip to the playoffs to a quick end
with a three game sweep by the Lakers. After three years of missing the playoffs, the Suns made one of the biggest turnarounds in NBA history and advanced to the Conference Finals in 1988-89. The Suns finally did it. In 1990, they ended their Captain Ahab imitation and caught their great whale. Only this leviathan was wearing Lakers Blue and Gold. The Lakers and Suns had been common postseason opponents. They had faced each other six times before, including the previous season. This time, Phoenix entered the best-of-seven Western Conference Semifinal after narrowly defeating Utah in the fifth and deciding game of an opening-round series. The Suns won the final game against the Jazz 104-102 with less than a second left.
1991-92, the Suns posted their fourth-straight season with 50 or more wins and carried their success into the playoffs. The Suns 1992-93 season is so rich with history that an author wrote a 328 page book on it. It was the year that saw forward Charles Barkley, shooting guard Danny Ainge and new Head Coach Paul Westphal come to town. Then there was the incredible regular season and an even more incredible playoff run. 1997-98, their 30th anniversary season, the Suns returned to the upper echelon of the Western Conference, posting the 12th 50+ win season in their history. Although their playoff run ended a bit too soon, Coach Danny Ainge brought the excitement back to the Valley of the Sun. The 1999-2000 campaign saw a midseason coaching change, a rash of injuries, a life-threatening seizure, a surprising unretirement and an exciting playoff run. Off-the-court incidents made the 2000-01 season a forgettable one, although the Suns did make a late-season rally to reach the NBA Playoffs for the 13th straight season. 2001-02, the Suns underwent a number of changes, including major trades and a coaching change, in a disappointing season that saw Phoenix miss the playoffs for the first time in 14 years. Yes, it&s true The Sporting News actually picked the Suns to finish 28th out of 29 NBA teams in 2002-03. But the Suns had the power of Marbury, Stoudemire and Hardaway behind them and they secured the eighth and final seed in the Western conference in the last week of the regular season for another trip to the playoffs.
