Augusta National
Golf Club: Home of the Masters Tournament
Augusta National Golf Club flourishes in the natural beauty of its
trees. Louis Alphonse Berckmans, Bob Jones and Clifford Roberts
decided that each hole would be adorned with a different plant.
Holes 1 -18 are named respectively: Tea Olive, Pink Dogwood, Flowering
Peach, Flowering Crab Apple, Magnolia, Juniper, Pampas, Yellow Jasmine,
Carolina Cherry, Camellia, White Dogwood, Golden Bell, Azalea, Chinese
Fir, Firethorn, Redbud, Nandina, and Holly. It is estimated that
more than 80,000 plants of over 350 varieties have been added to
Augusta National.
There are many well-known landmarks at Augusta National, including
Amen Corner, Rae's Creek, and Eisenhower Tree, to name just a few.
Amen Corner was first coined in a 1958 Sports Illustrated article
by Herbert Warren Wind. During the Masters Tournament that year,
heavy rains soaked the course on Saturday evening. For Sunday's
round, a local rule was implemented allowing players whose ball
was embedded to drop it without penalty. That day, while on No.
12, Arnold Palmer's ball became embedded in a steep bank. Uncertain
about the applicability of the rule, the official on the hole decided
that the ball should be played as it lay, but that Palmer could
also play a second dropped ball. Palmer holed out for a 5 with the
original ball and a 3 with the second ball. Several holes later
Palmer was told that his drop at 12 was proper and that his score
on the hole was 3, virtually assuring him his first major championship.
Today, Amen Corner refers to hole No's 11, 12 and 13.
During the 1700's, John Rae used his house as a fortress on the
Savannah River to keep residents safe during Indian attacks. Named
after Rae, who died in 1789, Rae's Creek runs in front of No. 12
green, has a tributary at No. 13 tee, and flows at the back of No.
11 green.
Located at hole No. 17, the Eisenhower Tree is approximately 195
yards from the Masters tee and left-center of the fairway. The loblolly
pine is 100-125 years old. The former President of the US and Club
member hit into the tree so many times he fought to have it removed.
At a Club's governors meeting in 1956, Eisenhower proposed cutting
it down, but he was ruled out of order by Clifford Roberts. Today,
the tree stands at about 65 feet tall.
The City of Augusta, Georgia
Founded in 1736, Augusta is Georgia's second oldest city. The city
was named in honor of the Princess of Wales at the time. General
James Oglethorpe founded Augusta along the banks of the Savannah
River.
Augusta was once the capital of Georgia and has a large number
of historically noteworthy homes and facilities, such as Woodrow
Wilson's childhood home and the Cotton Exchange, established in
1872.
Augusta is renowned for hosting the Masters Tournament each spring
at the Augusta National Golf Club, but it is also home to a total
of 16 public and 7 private golf courses. For more information on
