The history of the Masters
Golf Tournament
The Masters Tournament is considered one of the best-run golf
events in the world. The event traces its history to Bobby Jones
and Clifford Roberts, who decided to hold the annual event in
1934. Roberts suggested they call it the Masters Tournament, but
Bobby Jones felt that this sounded a little too haughty. Augusta
National Invitation Tournament was adopted instead and the title
was used for five years until 1939 when Jones gave in to Roberts'
initial suggestion and the name was officially changed. The first
Tournament was held on March 22, 1934. It was won by Horton Smith.
Jones preferred not to compete but was later persuaded by the
Club's members to join the competition. In the nine pre-war Tournaments
in which he played, his best finish was 13th in the inaugural
Tournament.
Starting in 1940, the Masters was scheduled each
year during the first full week in April. The Tournament was not
played in 1943, 1944 and 1945, due to World War II. To assist
the war effort, cattle and turkeys were raised on the Augusta
National grounds. The 1950's included the first of four victories
for the legendary Arnold Palmer. In 1966 Jack Nicklaus became
the first Masters champion to defend his title successfully. During
the decade of the 1970's Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts passed
away, leaving a lasting mark on the Masters Tournament and the
sport of golf.
The permanent Masters Trophy was introduced in 1961.
Made in England, it includes over 900 separate pieces of silver.
After slipping into the green coat awarded to all champions, winners
receive a sterling silver replica of this trophy and a Gold Medal.
The medal features a view of the Founders Circle in front of the
Clubhouse. Champions used to receive a bas-relief plaque before
the sterling replica trophy was adopted as the award in 1993.
A Masters Tournament runner-up receives a sterling silver salver
that shows a view of the live oak and Clubhouse from an area between
the first tee and putting green. The runner-up also receives a
Silver Medal showing the Clubhouse from the Founders Circle off
Magnolia Lane.
