The history of Golf

There are many different theories on how and where golf began.
One theory goes back to roman times to a game played in the streets
with a feather-filled leather ball. Others suggest that a game
played in Holland on the ice called "Het Kolven" is
where golf began. Golf as we know it today originated from a game
played on the eastern coast of Scotland in the Kingdom of Fife
during the 15th century. Players would hit a pebble with a stick
or primitive club. Golf slowly spread throughout Scotland until
1456 when King James II decreed that the game would no longer
be played as it was taking too much time from archery practice.
In 1502, the ban on golf was unofficially lifted. King James,
an avid golfer himself, played golf's first officially documented
game that same year. Van Cortlandt Golf Course in New York City
(the Bronx, to be specific) was built in 1895 and is the oldest
public golf course in the US. For more information on golf, visit
the World Golf Hall of Fame Website.
