About the Daytona 500
The first Daytona 500 was held on Feb. 22, 1959. The inaugural race
would also mark the race's first controversy. Lee Petty and Johnny
Beauchamp were fighting for victory as the race neared completion.
Petty and Beauchamp were exchanging the lead in the final laps of
the race when Joe Weatherly suddenly came from two laps behind to
give the leaders a run for their money. On the final lap, Petty
held the lead. When the threesome came off of Turn 4 to take the
checkered flag, they were driving parallel, with Weatherly on the
high side, Petty in the middle and Beauchamp at the bottom. The
finish kept fans riveted to the very end, but Beauchamp was declared
the victor. It wouldn't be until the following Wednesday, however,
that Petty was declared the bona fide winner when newsreel footage
proved that he beat Beauchamp by the closest of margins.
Today, the Daytona 500 is one of the most watched auto racing events
with an estimated racetrack attendance of 200,000 and more than
29 million TV viewers. The Daytona 500's loyal fan base has earned
it the moniker, "The Great American Race." The Daytona
International Speedway hosts the Daytona 500 each year. The 480-acre
auto racing complex plays host to a diverse array of racing events
year-round. In addition to 10 major weekends of racing activity,
including 190 mph NASCAR NEXTEL Cup stock cars, the Speedway is
used for testing various race vehicles for 2 months every year.
On the Sunday morning before the Daytona 500, each driver's schedule
usually includes a sponsorship appearance, driver's meeting, chapel
service, driver introductions and a final meeting with the crew
chief to go over any last minute details. One of the perks of winning
the Daytona 500 is collecting the largest payout in the NASCAR Winston
Cup Series. Winners also receive the Harley J. Earl trophy. For
many, winning the Daytona 500 is like wining the Super Bowl. For
