The history of Rock 'N' Roll
The moniker "Rock-and-Roll" was first used in 1951 by
Alan Freed, a Cleveland disc jockey, taken from the song "My
Baby Rocks Me with a Steady Roll". Many believe that the "Classic
Rock" years of music encompassed the decade between 1964 and
1974. Here's a taste of some of the events that marked the beginning
and end of that decade:
1964
1964 was a big year in the history of rock because of the "British
Invasion." On Friday, February 7th, the Beatles were welcomed
by 25,000 adoring fans at New York's JFK airport. Following their
historic appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," the Beatles
played their first American concerts in Washington, D.C. and New
York's Carnegie Hall. By the end of the year, the Beatles broke
all chart records with 15 singles in one year, including 6 number
one hits.
The Rolling Stones released their debut album in the U.K.
"Top of the Pops," a pop music TV show, premiered on
the BBC in England. America's version, "Shindig!," debuted
on ABC that same year.
1974
Dick Clark launched the American Music Awards.
The first sounds of "disco" music began appearing on
the radio in 1974 in songs by George McCrae ("Rock Your Baby")
and the Hues Corporation ("Rock the Boat").
Jefferson Airplane members Grace Slick, Paul Kantner, David Freiberg
and Marty Balin reformed under the name Jefferson Starship.
Rioting resulted after police began busting festival goers at the
Cherry Blossom Festival in Richmond Virginia, which featured Boz
Scaggs, Stories and Steve Miller Band. After a four hour-long battle,
76 people were arrested and many injured.
