History of the Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs, originally called the Chicago White Stockings,
played their first game under the management of A.G. Spalding (who
doubled as pitcher) on April 25, 1876. Earlier that same year, the
Chicago team had become one of eight charter members of the National
League. The White Stockings would go on to win the inaugural National
League championship.
Using the nicknames "White Stockings," "Colts,"
and Orphans," the team would play ball in five different locations
before the turn of the century. But the team flourished, becoming
one of baseballs first dynasties and winning six of the first 11
titles.
In 1902, the Chicago Daily News penned the nickname Cubs. The name
stuck and was officially adopted in 1907. Today, it is one of the
longest running nicknames in all of sports. The Cubs would win their
first World Series, defeating the Detroit Tigers four games to two,
in 1907. For more information on the Chicago Cubs, visit the official
Chicago
Cubs Website.
Wrigley Field: Home of the Chicago Cubs
Today, the Chicago Cubs play at Wrigley Field, which was built in
1914, and is the second-oldest ballpark in the majors behind Boston's
Fenway Park (built in 1912). Formerly called Weeghman Park, Wrigley
Field was built on grounds once home to a cemetery.
Wrigley Field has been the site of many historic moments, including
Babe Ruth's "called shot." As the story goes, Ruth pointed
to the bleachers during Game 3 of the 1932 World Series, and went
on to hit Charlie Root's next pitch for a homer. Wrigley Field was
also the site of Pete Rose's 4,191st career hit, which tied him
with Ty Cobb for the most hits in baseball history in 1985. Sammy
Sosa hit his 60th home runs in 1998, 1999 and 2001 at Wrigley Field.
One of Wrigley Fields many traditions is the flying of a flag atop
the scoreboard after a game. Chicago Cubs' fans know that a white
flag with a blue "W" indicates a victory and a blue flag
with a white "L" means the home team lost.
Located on West Addison Lane in Chicago, Wrigley Field can seat
39,345 baseball fans.
