The history of Boxing
Prize fights have been held throughout history. Greek boxers would
wear un-padded gloves and wrappings from their wrists to their elbows,
but were otherwise naked during competition. The word "boxing"
arrived on the scene in England in the 18th century to differentiate
fighting to settle arguments from fighting under the pre-arranged
rules for sport. Although men have always been the most frequent
prize fighters, there are some references to fights between women
as early as the 18th century. For many years, amateur and professional
boxing operated in tandem. Towards the end of the 20th century,
however, amateur boxing began to lose widespread support. Concerns
about bruises and black eyes gave way to more serious anxiety about
eye and brain damage. Medical checks on boxers, and medical supervision
of their fights, became an important element of both amateur and
professional boxing.
The
first American boxer, whose name was Bill Richmond, experienced
early fame in England. During the American Revolution, he was a
servant of Lord Percy, the general who commanded the British forces
occupying New York. Richmond was unbeaten in a series of boxing
matches against British soldiers, so Percy took him to England in
1777. Known as the "Black Terror," Richmond knocked out
his first Englishman in 25 seconds. Not much is known of his career
from then until 1805, when the 41-year-old Richmond was knocked
out by British champion Tom Cribb. Richmond continued boxing until
he was 52. For more information on boxing, visit the official International Boxing Hall of Fame Website.
